My Destiny ...
Do you believe in destiny?
I'm not sure that I do. I think that we create our own destiny - whether it be consciously or unconsciously. However, if I did believe in destiny, I would totally believe that it is my destiny to manage a market.
My childhood and teenage years were spent wandering through markets and I've visited (and shopped at) markets all over the world. From London's Nottinghill and Covent Garden Markets; the Pearl Markets in Beijing; street markets in the former eastern block that sold amazing local produce and gorgeous local handiwork and memorabilia; the farmers markets in San Francisco and flea markets in New York, just to name a few.
And not to mention all the wonderful markets that are to be found in Australia.
Fourteen years ago I moved to Wagga Wagga in rural NSW to marry a farmer (the farmer wasn't keen on moving to the city!). Coming from the eastern suburbs of Sydney, where most weekends were spent socialising and shopping at the bustling Paddington Markets, one of the first things I noticed was that Wagga Wagga didn't have what I called a "boutique" market.
I remember discussing with friends the possibility of starting a market that showcased good quality modern handmade and local foods. I even spent a ridiculous amount of time researching how to set up a boutique market, but then I married, had children and life didn't have time for me to indulge my market fantasy.
Eventually someone else started the market that I had created in my mind. Although it wasn't my market, I was thrilled that Wagga now had a market offering handmade work by local creatives and I rarely missed attending a market.
Eighteen months ago I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to take over that market and here I am managing the River & Wren Boutique Markets and loving every minute of it.
Destiny? Or a set of circumstances that led me to something that I love?
